Engineering Manager - Device Origination

You will manage the team building technologies that are crucial to PayJoy’s business: B2B and B2C apps and tools used for lending originations and integrations. These are currently full-stack, web-based products used by phone retailers across our global business as well as external integration partners. The merchants sell the phones and PayJoy provides the financing. Your web-based product and APIs power their business … think of it as a checkout process on steroids! This is a commerce-focused role (both B2B and B2C), across pure digital and hybrid physical/digital environments around the globe. 

You will contribute to our engineering and product strategy, help craft the team’s mission, expand the team through hands-on hiring and ensure that our product users and ultimately, our customers have a great experience.

When your team succeeds, the impact to PayJoy’s business will be clear to see.  You’ll partner directly with other senior leaders throughout PayJoy to understand our market, our customers, and our external partners. 

The engineering manager role spans the technical, business, and people domains.  You will be familiar enough with the codebase that you know what is easy and what is hard.  At times, you will also write code if you decide that your backlog requires it. You can dive deep into engineering issues with your team when needed, you have good technical judgment, and you’re able to identify great talent.  You also know the company’s business; you can align engineering success and business success; you can evaluate a team and know what to add; and you are an effective communicator even across cultural and functional differences.  Last but not least, you are attuned and engaged with the professional development of the engineers on your team. You give frequent feedback, you encourage team members to take risks and be courageous in their own decisions and professional relationships, and you consider how to help them get where they want to go!

  • Oversee technical/tactical execution of the product roadmap for Device Loan Origination products (“loans to buy phones”). Primary interfaces are with phone retailers across our *global* business; our web-based app and APIs power their business!
  • Your scope includes all the elements of commerce (pure digital and hybrid digital/physical), plus considerations for underwriting/risk and anti-fraud.
  • You will also work closely with other team leaders handling payment integrations, loan servicing, and device locking technology. 
  • This role is mission-critical, and your team has 24/7 operational responsibility (how you meet this challenge is up to you!)
  • Smartly expand the team as the company grows. Direct hires, contractors, outsourced vendors … whatever it takes!
  • Work with internal partners in engineering, product management, and business development
  • Requirements

  • There are many different successful paths to engineering leadership.  It is likely one or more of the following describes your experience
  • 8+ years of software engineering experience
  • 2+ years of experience managing and delivering full-stack software products in a modern programming language
  • 5+ years experience managing engineers in product companies
  • You may have had past roles at many different levels of leadership (manager, director, VP, founder) but for your next role, you prefer to be closer to the company.
