The World Cup Playbook: How Access to Credit Is Empowering Workers and Entrepreneurs Across Mexico

May 27, 2026

As the 2026 FIFA World Cup approaches, many people across Mexico are preparing not just to watch the tournament, but to participate in the economic opportunity surrounding it.

A new survey from 5,300 of PayJoy customers across Mexico found that 43% plan to generate income connected to the World Cup. From gig workers taking on additional jobs to small businesses preparing for increased demand, many are already investing ahead of the tournament to create new opportunities for their households.

Among gig workers preparing for World Cup-related demand:

  • 53% said they would not have been able to prepare without access to PayJoy credit
  • 75% plan to take on tournament-related work
  • Many said they view these investments as part of longer-term business growth beyond the tournament

Survey respondents said they are using financing to purchase devices needed for work, buy inventory for small businesses, upgrade transportation or delivery equipment, and fund staffing or marketing ahead of the games.

At PayJoy, we believe access to responsible credit can help empower underserved communities to participate more fully in moments of economic opportunity and build more stable financial futures.
